Using illustrations – mostly done in children’s books – isn’t something that began yesterday. There have been designers such as Coralie Bickford-smith who have been able to write and design their children’s book successfully. In fact, most children’s books are always illustrated to allow for ease of understanding for kids. However, creating illustrations for a book isn’t as easy as creating one illustration.
There are several factors that you need to consider such as the images you need to create as well as the size of the finished book. With that said, below are three must include considerations when you are creating illustrations for a book.
• Create a storyboard
This is one of the most important aspects when designing illustrations for a book. You have to work with the author – if you are not the author – and come up with a storyboard. The storyboard will help you visualize the book and allow you to draw sketches of the illustrations on a notepad or pieces of paper of what each page should communicate. While it seems like lots of work, you will definitely be more than happy with your end results.
• Create the artwork
Once you have your sketches, it will be time to create the artwork for the book which you can easily save in digital format and share with your client for approvals or any feedback that they may have regarding the particular illustration.
• Tools
Different illustrators use different tools to create their illustrations. While others are more traditional and still use paper, there are those that use tablets. Whatever tool you choose, ensure it works for you and that you will be comfortable enough to deliver.
